January 1st Green Lake Vigil to Commemorate Deaths in Iraq The number of US military deaths in Iraq has just reached 3000. To mark this sad moment, and to mourn the loss of hundreds of thousands of people killed in Iraq since the US invasion (far more than a million since the war started in 1991), please join us in a candle light vigil at 6:30-8:00 pm, Monday, Jan. 1st, on the south shore of Green Lake ( Green Lake Way and N 64th st). Even on New Years? Especially on New Years. For the people of Iraq, and for our troops--most of both groups want the US to withdraw its forces. And, of course, for ourselves and our community, to help turn America to a foreign policy of real security through international cooperation and human rights. Because the date of this vigil was unknown until now, we need your help to get the word out to people. Please forward this email, mention the vigil to friends, and invite a neighbor. This is a forum with local experts on the subject of consensus - a decision making process as experienced in many of today’s communities and organizations. Host a weekend Permaculture Workshop with tutors: Huckleberry Leonard and Brent Naylor 'DESIGN YOUR OWN ORGANIC PROPERTY' - Permaculture for the Suburbs This workshop is for people with small suburban properties who want to work in harmony with nature to produce an abundance of food in a functional environment of beauty. Through an interactive and hands-on approach, participants will learn how to integrate the following into the small space of a typical sub/urban lot: organic vegetable gardens, herbs and flowers, orchard, physical structures, children's play spaces, small animal systems, water features and small wilderness areas. Using a 'Permaculture' approach to landscape design, the workshop takes place within the home of the family whose property we utilize as our learning ground, culminating in an integrated design and practical activities on their land. The workshop includes observation skills, site analysis, holistic goal setting, permaculture design principles and practical organic growing techniques. The workshop generally begins with a public Slideshow Presentation: 'Small Space: Big Harvest: an introduction to Suburban Permaculture' followed by two full days of Property Design Workshop. It is necessary to attend both days. The hosts do most of the publicity/recruiting and registration. We (the teachers) provide the flyers, instructional materials and of course, the instruction. The hosts receive a free permaculture design for their property and the experience and learning from the workshop. The fees range between $150 and $200 on a sliding scale. The classes are 2 days, Sat. and Sun with a slide show on Fri evening. The Friday evening slide show is open to non-participants on a donation basis. The participants will usually be from the local area and will stay at their own homes. Meals are usually pot luck. The workshop hours are usually 9am to 4 or 5 pm each day. The weekends available right now are: Jan. 5, 6 & 7; Jan. 12, 13 &14; Jan. 19, 20 & 21; Feb. 9, 10 & 11; Mar. 2, 3 & 4; and Mar. 9, 10 & 11. Other Comments: This is a concept developed and successfully implemented by Robina McCurdy in New Zealand. These workshops are a bridge between the one or two hour "introduction to Permaculture" lecture and the 80 hour Permaculture design course. They provide a means to learn and implement a permaculture design for a modest outlay of time and money.
Greetings! The wind and rain of autumn are upon us and I have been nestling into my new location in Olympia, Fertile Ground Guesthouse and Community Center. This beautiful example of urban permaculture is on a double lot in downtown Olympia, directly behind the Timberland Library. We are available to host many events, including pizza parties for local non-profits using our cob oven. Fertile Ground will be the location for many upcoming events in the future. We have diverse facilities here at Fertile Ground, including a great kitchen for classes, musical instruments, and a studio/classroom space with projection possibilities.
